First Example of Imperialism – Spanish American War Background Who? Where? Phillipines, Cuba (Both Spain’s Colonies) Cuba The Philippines

Why? Help give freedom to Spain’s colonies!

Made Spain look bad in American eyes Causes of the Spanish American War: #1- Spain’s Reconcentration Camp Policy What? Civilians were forced into government run camps (with bad conditions) Why? Spain was fighting a guerilla war and needed to separate “good” from “bad guys How did it lead to war? Made Spain look bad in American eyes

Made Americans more likely to help out Cuba Causes of the Spanish American War: #2- America Economic Interests What? Many of Cuba’s sugar plantations were owned by Americans Why? Protecting their economic interests How did it lead to war? Made Americans more likely to help out Cuba

Made Americans want war! Causes of the Spanish American War: #3- Yellow Journalism What? Newspaper created highly exaggerated stories Why? Editors Hearst and Pulitzer competing to see who could sell more papers Papers make more $ if they keep you scared and interested How did it lead to war? Made Americans want war!

“Spark” that started the war “Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!” Causes of the Spanish American War: #4- U.S.S. Maine Explosions What? USS Maine explodes in Havana, Cuba Harbor, Most Americans believe it was Spain’s fault 1976 US Navy analyzed the sunken ship, decided that the hull blew OUT not IN How did it lead to war? “Spark” that started the war “Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!”

Causes of the Spanish American War: #5- De Lome Letter What? the New York Journal published a private letter written by the Spanish Ambassador to Washington, DC Criticized and made fun of President McKinley (called him a weak) How did it lead to war? Americans were outraged and considered his comments an insult against the US

Effects of the Spanish American War: Treaty of Paris Called “A Splendid Little War” said by Secretary of State John Hay because Spanish defeat took only 11 days Spain granted independence to Cuba and ceded (gave) the US Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines for a payment of $20 million The new territories added 100,000 square miles and close to 10 million people to the American empire The U.S. Becomes a world power!

Song Lyric Analysis What was going on in Cuba that would concern many Americans? How did Americans find out about the events in Cuba? Who is being blamed in the song? What is he being blamed for? Why might an editor have wanted to start a war? What did the editor do to provoke the war? What might be the reaction of American readers to the editor’s news stories? Now wars are never started by those who have to eventually fight them. And profit is often gained by those who plot and intrigue to ignite them. Now take the recent struggle ’twixt America and Spain, When all is said and all is done, there’s only one man to blame. Chorus Editor, Editor, we all know your name. Editor, Editor, you’re the man to blame. (Repeat) He saw his circulation sinking mighty low, So he says we need a yarn to put us on the go. Then he looked at Cuba, and then he looked at Spain, He says I’ll tell the world and God of Cuba’s tragic shame. And so he wrote of pain and tear, of anguish and despair, Taxes made and orphans made, and print both bold and bare. He wrote of bleeding Cuba, he wrote of cruel Spain, He says that we should intervene, in Christianity’s name.
