REWARDS FOR INVOLVEMENT Ron Collis Global Standards and Trade Regulations Group Rockwell Automation

REWARDS FOR INVOLVEMENT Significance of Public Standards Standards Legal This is the Sales pitch

Why Are Standards Important to Business Standards are like Rules He who writes the Standards sets the rules for product design or service delivery. Standards are Specifications Created by Industry/Business and it is Industry/Business that uses these. Governments do not create Standards Governments create Regulations that may cite Standards. Standards Bodies do not write Standards Standards Bodies facilitate standards writing.

Why Write Standards Why should you get involved in writing a Standard: If there is no intention to Certify to that Standard? For Industry to show interoperability. Important in interfacing with other systems To be a leader in the technology. Not a follower To encourage design consultants to quote Standards in their product specifications.. Commercial advantage. To Show compliance to a Regulation/Directive End Users will not risk using non compliant products.

What the Chinese Government would like Chinese Industry to be: China What the Chinese Government would like Chinese Industry to be: Third Class: Industry makes products based on other peoples designs. Second Class: Industry Designs products First Class: Industry writes Standards (sets the rules).

Why is Conformity Assessment Important to Business Regulators like Certificates Those who have a certificate, get to sell into a market. In a number of economies it is a “visa” to enter the market. No Certificate --- No Sell.

What Certification?: Mark du jour! Increasing number of economies are establishing or revising certification systems New Marks maybe required for each new system Norway Denmark Finland Sweden China Korea Taiwan Saudia Arabia Argentina Brasil Mexico Hong Kong Australia Russia Germany GS Mark Singapore Switzerland CE Marking - EU New Certifications may require testing, evaluation in-country & only by in-country laboratories More time & money to determine requirements & demonstrate compliance Can I make our products bigger to accommodate the marks ?

Why Certify How does Certification effect you? They may not allow you to import product into certain countries. That could be a big cost impost at the front gate It effects post sales/Installation services. You may not be able to have the power turned onto your installation. It effects your Strategy in going after sales in vertical markets. End Users will not risk a second issue.

Opportunities for Business participation in Standards Development For End Users: To have their practical experience included in a Standard. For Consultants Engineers: To have their own specifications considered. For Manufacturers: To become a leader in a particular Technology.

More Opportunities Early Warning Uninterrupted product/supply flow - before, during & after standard development Opportunity to protect product differentiating attributes Influencing the definition of the intended purposes and evaluation criteria for products, processes and services Influencing the extent and the specifics of the improvement of products, processes and services – *

Challenges for Business participation in Standards Development To Get the CEO’s of companies to appreciate the importance of Standards to their business Funding to attend international meetings.

Effective programs facilitating Business involvement in Standards Development Being a member of a Trade Association’s specific Forum (AiGroup, HAE Forum). Involvement as an expert on the subject matter Networking/Participation within Industry Forums.

Examples of government reliance on market-driven Conformity Assessment procedures. The Australian Mining Regulators: Require IEC Ex Certificates of Conformity (CoC) or ANZ Ex Certificates. China: requires CCC Marking EU: Requires to meet the Directives Korea: Requires KS Marking of IT Type products.

Communicating the business implication of standards and conformity assessment to business executives If you are not at the table: Then you have not had a say in the development of a Standard. Don’t complain after a standard has been released

Business opportunities to those with up to date knowledge and ability to influence There is a way to have an impact on all this activity. Yes: Join AiGroup’s HAE Forum. This is one way you can influence Standards and Certification activity.
