Chapter 8 Section 1 Properties of Carbon

Carbon Atoms and Bonding Carbon atom has 4 Valence electrons, it can bond with 4 atoms and have 4 bonds. So it is possible to form molecules made of thousands of carbon atoms. Because of its unique ability to combine in many ways with itself and other elements, carbon has a central role in the chemistry of living organisms. Carbon atom can be arranged straight chains, branch chains, and rings

Forms of Pure Carbon 4 Forms of element carbon: 1. Diamond: is a crystalline form of carbon in which each carbon atom is bonded strongly to four other carbon atoms. It has very high melting point. It is used in cutting tools. 2. Graphite: Each carbon atom is bonded tightly to three other carbon atoms in flat layers, the bonds between layers are very weak making it very slippery. It is used as a lubricant.

3. Fullerenes: Carbon atoms arranged in the shape of a hollow sphere 3. Fullerenes: Carbon atoms arranged in the shape of a hollow sphere. Maybe used in medicine. 4. Nanotubes: Carbon atoms that are arranged in the shape of a long, hollow cylinder. May be used as conductors in electronic devices and super-strong cables.
