Year 9 Subject Selection – Commercial Music
Course Description Students study the ways music is used in radio, television and film. They explore the use of music to enhance interaction and communication in advertising by supporting the images and emotions. Students learn to identify the musical elements that are important in evoking time and place, expressing emotions, conveying a character or idea and setting a mood. They then apply this knowledge by creating their own soundtrack to a short film extract.
Why Study this? Work Tasks Assessment tasks You look at how music is used in radio, T.V and film, then create pieces of work that demonstrate the effect or impact music has on the image. Analyse the use of music in creating moods- why do you feel scared/calm/enthusiastic/warm and fuzzy…… Is it the choice of instruments, use of rhythm/melody/pitch/harmony……. How can I create the mood I want? Radio Broadcast Project: Creation and recording of a radio advertisement. Film Soundtrack: Creation and recording of a soundtrack for a short film extract using the computer program Garage Band.
