CHAPTER 2 PATTERNS OF LIFE

POPULATION DISTRIBUTION The way people are spread out in different places throughout the world

DESERTIFICATION The long-term process in which fertile land is changed into desert

DROUGHT A period when little or no rain falls

PEOPLE, LAND, AND WATER It is easier for people to live on flat land near water. It is harder to live in desert climates and rugged mountains.

MIGRATION The movement of groups of people from one place to another

URBANIZATION The movement of people from rural areas to cities or urban areas
