Progressivism 1890 – 1920 pp. 305 - 337

Goals of Progressives Protect social welfare YMCA, Social Gospel, Salvation Army Promoting moral improvement WCTU Creating economic reform Socialism, muckrakers Fostering efficiency Scientific analysis of production

Socialism Some of the early Progressives were also socialist. What is socialism? Government (the people) control of big business. All share in the profits. Has rarely succeeded as economic system

Teddy Roosevelt War hero from Sp-Am. War. As President, he “spoke softly and carried a big stick”. Sought major reforms like the Three C’s Control of corporations Consumer protection Conservation of natural resources

Roosevelt Power Brought the power of the Presidency to a new level. TR thought that big business was not necessarily bad. Broke up the “bad trusts” but kept the good ones. He wanted the industrialists to know that gov’t was run by him, not them.

Square Deal Roosevelt came up with a square deal with the people. - In his mind, both the people and business win. 1906 – Meat Inspection Act – meat shipped over state lines subject to feds. Pure Food and Drug Act (1906) – labels had to be correct. It had better be what it said it was.

William Howard Taft

William Howard Taft Followed in TR’s footsteps. Wanted to be known as a trust-buster Didn’t make distinction between good trusts and bad trusts. In all, he busted up around 90 trusts – double the number of TR.

Taft’s Problems He wasn’t TR He didn’t lower tariffs enough He opened up land that TR had set aside for conservation. He angered TR

Election of 1912

Split Ticket Taft- Republican Teddy- as Progressive candidate or the Bull Moose. (tell speech story) Woodrow Wilson- Democrat Republicans split between Taft, TR. Wilson wins.

Dr. Thomas Woodrow Wilson An educator and the son of a Presbyterian Minister “Schoolmaster in Politics” President of Princeton University, 1902-1910 Governor of New Jersey, 1911-1913 Elected president in 1912

New Freedoms Wilson was an intellectual. Had trouble communicating with the common man. Sought to attack the “Triple Wall of Privilege Trusts Banks Tariffs
