Who Are We?

Stuart & Dr. Jo M. Stanchfield Founded in 1992 by the late Dr. Jo M. Stanchfield, an internationally renowned crusader in the field of literacy, her husband Stuart, and friends, the American Literacy Corporation (ALC) is a non-profit organization consisting of individuals who are deeply committed to improving literacy skills in our nation. Dr. Stanchfield has been internationally recognized for her research, knowledge, and enthusiasm in promoting increased achievement in literacy www.AmerLitCorp.org

"THOSE HAVING TORCHES WILL PASS THEM ON TO OTHERS.“ - Plato "First of all, in the context of education, this implies that teachers have the Torch of Literacy - that they have the knowledge and understanding of the meaning of literacy. Secondly, Plato implies that those who have the Torch will also have the desire and the will to pass it on. Enthusiastic, caring teachers pass this Torch to their students everyday." Dr. Jo M. Stanchfield - Founder, American Literacy Corporation www.AmerLitCorp.org

What Is Our Mission?

The American Literacy Corporation recognizes and rewards teachers who significantly increase the literacy levels of their students We believe the teacher is the key to improving the literacy skills of listening, speaking, critical thinking, reading, and writing. Improved literacy results in greater performance and productivity, not only in school, but also in the work force. www.AmerLitCorp.org

What Are Our Goals?

The American Literacy Corporation holds high the torch of literacy as it strives to  accomplish two goals: ❶ ALC annually recognizes and rewards exceptional California K-8 teachers and certificated reading support personnel who significantly increase the literacy levels of their students. "Outstanding Contributions to Literacy" awardees receive a cash award $2,000 and a $500 school grant for a literacy event. Visit our website to submit an online application for this award and to download helpful “Read Aloud Strategies”. www.AmerLitCorp.org

The American Literacy Corporation holds high the torch of literacy as it strives to  accomplish two goals: ❷  ALC strives to increase literacy levels in students by providing teachers and parents with specific strategies for improving comprehension through reading, listening, critical thinking, writing, and speaking. This is accomplished through READ ALOUD Strategies, created by Dr. Jo Stanchfield for grades K-8. These strategies help teachers develop critical thinking skills in students utilizing guided reading and listening lessons using excellent novels and literature appropriate to their grade level. www.AmerLitCorp.org

Since inception, ALC has awarded over 190 teachers / staff with the ‘Outstanding Contributions to Literacy’ award. Award winners receive a $2,000 cash award and a $500 school grant to be used for a school-wide literacy project. www.AmerLitCorp.org
