Presentation transcript:

George Philippe Seurat 1859-1891

Seurat Born into a wealthy family in France Always wanted to paint, but was initially rejected Studied the science of color and developed a new painting technique called pointilism Used colors to represent emotions

Pointilism a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of pure color are applied in patterns to form an image.

Seurat’s Theory of Art and Color Happiness can be shown by the domination of luminous hues, by the predominance of warm colors, and by the use of lines directed upward. Calm is achieved through an equivalence/balance of the use of the light and the dark, by the balance of warm and cold colors, and by lines that are horizontal. Sadness is achieved by using dark and cold colors and by lines pointing downward.
