Why do we need to study geography? We need to understand regions, their locations, landforms, and how people react and live in those areas.

Geography Geography is the study of the Earth’s environment and how it (the Earth)shapes people’s lives and how the Earth is shaped by people’s activities.

5 Themes of Geography What Are They? Region Location Place Movement Human/ Environment What Are They?

Region A region is an area with common features that set it apart from other areas. They share common features.

Region Types Climate ex. Humid, rainy Landforms ex. Mountains, deserts, rivers Population ex. Italians, Chinese in Chinatown History ex. Battle of Shiloh , Persia, Battle of Pearl Harbor

Human/ Environment Interaction Human/ Environment Interaction is the relationship between people and the land on which they live.

How do Humans Interact With the Environment? River Barges Irrigation Drinking water Cruises

Place Place is a description of what an area is like based on the various features (natural or built by people). Refers to features that makes one place different from every place. You can identify a place by its landforms, climate, plants, animals, people, language, or culture. EX. SEC, jungle, Yankees(not baseball), pyramids, frozen tundra.

Location Location is the measurement of where something can be found. Location can be described absolutely and relatively. Absolute location: 2611 Central Parkway Relative location: Up the road is the bank.

Movement The movement of people, goods, and ideas around the world, as well as how patterns of movement affect people and the way in which communities develop.

Activity Using the 5 themes, create a flow map of how they interact in your area. Ex. Buying chocolate. Work in your groups to create your map.
