What is a questionnaire? A questionnaire is usually made up of a list of questions or statements. The purpose is to gather information from respondents.
Can you tell me how to construct a questionnaire Can you tell me how to construct a questionnaire? Are there any rules for us to follow?

Skills building 2: greeting others and making introductions How do we usually greet people in an appropriate manner?
Good morning / afternoon. Nice to meet you. Hello! Excuse me, … How are you going? How’s it going?
How to introduce yourself to others? I’m … from … I’d like to … My name is … I’m from … I’d like to ask you a few questions if you don’t mind. It’s for / to …
Practice in Pairs Work with your partner. Greet your partner and introduce yourself to him or her as a reporter from the school magazine. Your can refer to the example in the textbook.
Step 2: carrying out an interview Prepare your questions in advance of the interview. Welcome the candidate - try to put them at ease. Introduce yourself and any other people present. Explain the structure of the interview.
Ask open-ended questions - ones that cannot be answered with a yes or no. Allow the candidate time to think and speak. Keep control of the interview. If you feel the candidate is going off-track, turn the conversation back to the information you need.
Who would you like to interview? Work in pairs and make up a dialogue.
Skills building 3: analysing statistics We analyse the statistics gathered from a number of questionnaires before we use the information to write a report. These statistics are analysed to draw conclusions and make suggestions.
Below are some statistics gathered from a school survey about students’ hobbies and interests. Analyze the statistics and draw at least three more conclusions, then make your suggestions.
Conclusions: Playing sport is the most popular activity for students in the school. The second most popular activity for students in the school is surfing the Internet. Only a few students in the school like reading. Most students in the school do not like dancing.
Suggestion: . The school should have more sports equipment. . The school should help the students understand how to use the Internet for study and research. . The school should find ways to get the students interested in reading. . School social events should not include dancing, because most students simply are not interested in it.
