Existence of God: Ontological and Cosmological Arguments Psalm 42:1; Hebrews 3:4 April 2, 2017

We are answering the question: Why do you believe in God? Existence of God We are answering the question: Why do you believe in God?

Existence of God We have already looked at the Teleological argument. Which stated simply is: Design Demands a Designer.

Existence of God We have looked at the Anthropological Argument or the Moral Argument. If moral codes exist then there must be a moral creator. Moral codes exist Therefore, a moral creator must exist

Ontological Argument Basic Argument: If man is a distinctively worshipping being, there must be an reason. Man is a distinctively worshipping being. There must be an adequate reason. God is the adequate reason. Psalm 42:1

Ontological Argument Think back to Social Studies and History in school. Egypt, the Fertile Crescent all those ancient civilizations. What was the one thing they all had in common?

Ontological Argument Every civilization across time has worshipped something. So it seems man has a natural affinity to worship.

Ontological Argument What happens after death? Most will talk about some sort of after-life. Man instinctively knows there is something greater which needs to be respected, honored and worshipped. Go back to Psalm 42:1

Ontological Argument How many religions are there across the word today? According to religioustolerance.org there are: 19 major world religions. These are broken into 270 large divisions and many smaller ones. 34,000 claim to be “Christian”

Ontological Argument How many denominations are in the world today? World Christian Encyclopedia says there are over 33,000 denominations in 238 countries. Man seems to be a being of worship.

Psalm 42:1 John 4:23-24 Revelation 15:4; 19:10; 22:8-9 Ontological Argument Psalm 42:1 John 4:23-24 Revelation 15:4; 19:10; 22:8-9

Cosmological Argument Nothing Comes From Nothing Basic Premise: Something cannot come from nothing. Something exists. Something must have already existed.

Cosmological Argument Alternative Premises: Rational thinking beings cannot come from irrational thinks beings. Rational think beings exist. Rational thinking being(s) have always existed. Hebrews 3:4

Cosmological Argument Infinite Regression states: A person cannot go so far back as to find the first cause of all things. Yet this is what evolutionists claim to have done.

Cosmological Argument Evolutionist claim: “there has and always will be regeneration in the universe.” 2nd Law of Thermodynamics “Everything is running down from a useable state of energy to an unusable state of energy.”

Cosmological Argument They believe in the “Big Bang” A massive explosion which has NO cause. This just happened and because of it all life was jump started.

Cosmological Argument There is no Perpetual Movement. All things will run down. Therefore, sense all things are running down, there must be an adequate reason for life on earth.

Cosmological Argument So because all things are running down there and nothing can come from nothing. There must be NOT only a Creator but also a Sustainer of the universe.

Cosmological Argument Hebrews 1:1-3 Colossians 1:15-17 Isaiah 40:28
