Early Islam: A Brief History

400 AD

600 AD

Arabia 600 AD Had long been fought over by the Persians and Byzantines. Huge war in 608-628, leaves Byzantium and Persia Crippled

Islam: 622-750 AD The Prophet Mohammed moves to Medina in 622 and converts the local population to Islam. From there, the Islamic faith sweeps across Arabia. The weakened empires can do nothing about this, and by 750 AD, the Arab Empire stretches from Spain to the Middle East.

Arab Empire: 622-750 AD

Abbasid Caliphate: 750-1258 AD The Muslim Conquests came to an end from 700-750. The Abbasid dynasty takes over the Arab Empire. Under them, the Islamic world reaches its height of innovation, wealth, and power.

Abbasid Caliphate: 750-1258 AD

Abbasid Caliphate: 750-1258 AD Possibly the wealthiest pre-industrial empire. Marked by political and military struggles for most of its existence, especially the crusades from 1096-1192. Ended by the Mongol Invasions of 1206-1258

Task: Summarize: Thesis and Evidence: Why was the Abbasid Caliphate important? What was life like in the Caliphate? Thesis and Evidence: Could the Abbasid Caliphate have been as advanced and wealthy without its connection to the silk road?
