Sculptural Fundamentals
Technique The combination of physical ability and the use of tools and materials. The way ideas become reality. The sculptor must have a knowledge of the media in order to know what tools to use. Without technique ideas can not be shared
Form Form is the shape! Deals with real space. The package in which the idea is presented. May be representational. May be abstract. Without form there is no way for the technique to be demonstrated.
Content Content is the feeling, message or importance of the sculpture. Akin to the sense of awe, of inspiration – of content – at seeing a beautiful object! Could cause chills, queasiness, disgust! Without content, the work is a failure!!!!!!!!!!
Elements of Design Shape Texture Space Planes Value Color
Shape The total of its parts. The outline of a sculpture, total volume. Shape is how the viewer sees the sculpture, the masses of media and the penetration of space.
Texture Something that you can feel or may look as though you can touch it.
Space The immediate area around the sculpture that is not mass. Evokes the sense of depth.
Planes Shapes become sculptural when facets (planes) and vales are added. Areas defined by abrupt variations in direction.
Value The light and dark areas of sculpture demonstrated by the shadows and lack of them caused by the planes, textures and shape.
Color Color usually is the natural aspect of the medium, such as natural wood, stone or clay. Media may be intermixed to vary the color variations.
Principles of Order Balance Proportion Unity Variety Repetition Movement
Balance Form in relation to gravity or the form in relation to the design. Formal (symmetrical) and informal (asymmetrical)
Proportion The size or ratio relationship within the sculpture
Unity Occurs when all parts of a sculpture work together to produce a completeness
Variety Variation or diversity within a work that contributes to its interest.
Repetition Resemblances of the parts to each other in a complete sculpture.
Movement Visual exaggeration or symbol indicating motion.
Styles Refers to the particular characteristics acquired from technique, subject matter, skill, instruction, and time.
