Some notes Rosie Budd At the beginning of the article, Augustine distinguishes between personal experience and the teaching of the church. How would we respond if these 2 were not considered compatible by the powers that be?  Do we agree that ‘to understand scripture is to understand the conditions of love’? What do we understand to be the conditions of love? Must we stop loving the temporal in order to love the eternal?  How do we respond to Augustine’s emphasis on listening? In what way do we experience contemplation as a dialogue with life? What are the limits of language to convey religious experience and truth?
