The “for every action saying” isn’t always helpful! Talk to your neighbor and discuss why the action/reaction saying isn’t helpful sometimes 10
Newton’s Third Law of Motion 1. According to Newton’s third law of motion, when one object applies a force on a second object, the second object applies an equal force in the opposite direction on the first object. Lesson 4-2
Newton’s Third Law of Motion (cont.) 2. A force pair is the forces two objects apply to each other. 3.If the forces of a force pair always act in opposite directions and are always the same strength, they do not cancel each other out because each force acts on a DIFFERENT object. Lesson 4-2
Using Newton’s Third Law of Motion When you push against an object, the force you apply is called the action force. The force applied by the object back against you is called the reaction force. According to Newton’s third law of motion, every action force has a reaction force in the opposite direction. Lesson 4-3
Momentum Momentum is a measure of how hard it is to stop a moving object. Momentum is the product of an object’s mass and velocity. Lesson 4-4
1 2 2) A 5.0 kg mass has a velocity of 8.0 m/s east Find the objects momentum. m= v= p= Lesson 4-4
Momentum (cont.) An object’s momentum is in the same direction as its velocity. According to Newton’s first law, if the net force on an object is zero, THEN velocity and momentum don’t change. Lesson 4-4
3. Because momentum is the product of mass and velocity( change in acceleration), the force on an object equals its change in momentum. Example: p = m(v) 4kg(m/s) = 1kg (4 m/s) 8kg(m/s) = 1kg (8 m/s) Lesson 4-4
Conservation of Momentum According to the law of conservation of momentum, the total momentum of a group of objects stays the same unless outside forces such as friction act on the objects. Lesson 4-5
Conservation of Momentum (cont.) When colliding objects bounce off each other, it is an elastic collision. If objects collide and stick together, the collision is inelastic. The total momentum will be the same before and after the collision. momentum in space Lesson 4-5
WORK Tell your friend 5 kinds of work and let them tell you a different 5. The scientific definition of work involves force and motion!
3. So, is WORK done when a book is pushed across a table?
4. WORK transfers energy to an object. 5. WORK is only done if the object moves a distance.
WORK Answer with your partner 6-8 6. A person pushes on a wall for a long time is that work? 7. A weight lifter lifts barbells over his head is work being done? 8. A weight lifter hold 300 pounds over his head for 5 minutes, is work done.
9. Work is a formula 10. When the force is being applied in the direction of the moving object you can use that formula! Force at an Angle
Force at an Angle 11. You will be given the amount of forward force and direction in these problems. 12.Work done when you lift something is equal to weight of the object times the distance it is lifted. REMEMBER weight is a force!
13. CRASH COURSE TAKE NOTES 14. POWER is how fast you do work 13. CRASH COURSE TAKE NOTES 14. POWER is how fast you do work! Formula is: 11. You will be given the amount of forward force and direction in these problems. 12.Work done when you lift something is equal to weight of the object times the distance it is lifted. REMEMBER weight is a force!
