What is a Mentor? Not a Friend We are a guide Choosing to journey with residents as they traverse life

Am I EFFECTIVE? Did you know an hour a week spent intentionally with someone can move them from “high risk behaviours” to “low or moderate risk behaviours”? Did you know that the more unpaid supports a person has in life the healthier they are?

Who are your mentors? Paid (professional) Supports? Unpaid (relational) Supports?

Time? To debrief or not to debrief? How do you spend your time? Where we spend our time shows what we actually value To debrief or not to debrief? How to avoid The Dark Side (Burn Out)

Who has sought you out for Mentoring? Who do you mentor? Biblical

The Journey Why? “Over the years, I have come to realize that the greatest trap in our life is not success, popularity, or power, but self-rejection. Success, popularity, and power can indeed present a great temptation, but their seductive quality often comes from the way they are part of the much larger temptation to self-rejection. When we have come to believe in the voices that call us worthless and unlovable, then success, popularity, and power are easily perceived as attractive solutions. The real trap, however, is self-rejection. As soon as someone accuses me or criticizes me, as soon as I am rejected, left alone, or abandoned, I find myself thinking, "Well, that proves once again that I am a nobody." ... [My dark side says,] I am no good... I deserve to be pushed aside, forgotten, rejected, and abandoned. Self-rejection is the greatest enemy of the spiritual life because it contradicts the sacred voice that calls us the "Beloved." Being the Beloved constitutes the core truth of our existence.” ― Henri J.M. Nouwen

Why 2? “Let us not underestimate how hard it is to be compassionate. Compassion is hard because it requires the inner disposition to go with others to place where they are weak, vulnerable, lonely, and broken. But this is not our spontaneous response to suffering. What we desire most is to do away with suffering by fleeing from it or finding a quick cure for it.” ― Henri J.M. Nouwen

Why 3? “All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.” ― St. Francis of Assisi,

Why 4? “Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” ― St. Francis of Assisi “Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that have received--only what you have given.” ― St. Francis of Assisi

Why 5? “All the darkness of the world cannot extinguish the light of a small candle.” ― St. Francis of Assisi To the whole world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world. Anonymous

Reflections How do the previous quotes speak to you? What is the Journey we are on? What is the purpose of our role? What is our community? What is our own health? Where is the line between each of us (boundaries)?
