ALEKS Workshop #1 Setting up a course

www.aleks.com

Logging on to ALEKS You have been given a teacher login name and a student login name. Use your teacher login name to log on to ALEKS and begin setting up your course. You will use your student login name later on in this workshop.

When you log on initially, you will end up on the home screen When you log on initially, you will end up on the home screen. We are going to click on the “Create a new class” link.

First you will be asked to name the class, I usually name the class by the period and year. Choose the topic, grade, and subscription type as well.

You will receive a class code, you will need this when you have students register for your class. Next we will customize the class.

First we will align the course with a textbook by selecting the “Direct student learning” link.

Select your textbook from the drop down menu. Then click next.

You can select dates for when your class will be completing each chapter. If there is a chapter that your class skips, leave the dates blank.

Questions about aligning your ALEKS course to a textbook?

We will now use the content editor to select specific topics for your course to cover.

Check the boxes of topics that you want to remove from the class Check the boxes of topics that you want to remove from the class. If you want to see an example of a problem related to the topic, double click on the topic.

You can click on the other links to customize other areas of your class. If you have questions about any of the other options, let me know.

When you have finished customizing your class, log off of ALEKS. Log back on to ALEKS using your student login name.

Student Login When you log on as a student, you will be taken through a brief training on how to use ALEKS. Once you complete the training, you will be given an initial assessment. Take the initial assessment to ensure that you have customized the class content the way that you have desired.

When you finish the initial assessment, you will be given a pie chart report. From here, you are able to pick out topics that you would like to work on.

Questions? About customizing your course? About the initial assessment? About the pie report?

Next Workshop In Workshop #2, we will focus on holding students accountable for their work on ALEKS. Until the next workshop, continue to log on to ALEKS as a student and a teacher in order to become more comfortable using ALEKS.
