Plural and uncountable nouns with and without the Unit 74

We don’t use the before a noun when we mean something in general. Example I’m afraid of dogs. (not “the dogs”)

When we mean particular dogs We say.. -I’m afraid of my neighbor’s dogs. -I’m afraid of the dogs at my neighbor’s house.

Examples Doctors are paid more than teachers. I like football / athletics / skiing / chess. Do you like collect stamps? My favorite subjects at school was history / English / physics.

most people / most dogs etc.. We say.. most people / most dogs etc.. (not ’the most…’) Example - Most people like George.

We say the… when we mean something in particular. Examples I often listen to music. but: The film wasn’t very good but I liked the music.

Examples Way say.. Are English people friendly? (English people in general) but: Are the English people you know friendly? (only the English people you know, not in general)

We say.. All cars have wheels. but: All the students in the class like their teacher.

The difference between ‘something in general ‘ and ‘something in particular’ is not always very clear. Example Do you like apples? (apples in general) Do you like green apples? (not all apples, but red apples is still general) Did you like the apples we had with our meal last night? ( particular apples)
