Changes in sevoflurane plasma concentration with delivery through the oxygenator during on-pump cardiac surgery  R. Nitzschke, J. Wilgusch, J.F. Kersten, C.J. Trepte, S.A. Haas, D.A. Reuter, A.E. Goetz, M.S. Goepfert  British Journal of Anaesthesia  Volume 110, Issue 6, Pages 957-965 (June 2013) DOI: 10.1093/bja/aet018 Copyright © 2013 The Author(s) Terms and Conditions

Fig 1 (a) The progression of sevoflurane plasma concentration (SPC) over the entire study period and (b) BIS values over the entire study period. Data presented are individual courses for each patient, and error bars show baseline-adjusted pointwise means and 95% CI. Gray shading shows the target ranges for BIS values (40–60). BIS, bispectral index. British Journal of Anaesthesia 2013 110, 957-965DOI: (10.1093/bja/aet018) Copyright © 2013 The Author(s) Terms and Conditions

Fig 2 The influence of changes in patient temperature, haematocrit and oxygenator fresh-gas flow on sevoflurane plasma concentration (SPC). A slope of −0.19 for the influence of patient temperature indicates that a decrease in temperature of 1.0°C correlates to an increase in SPC of 1.9 μg ml−1. A slope of 0.21 for the influence of the oxygenator fresh-gas supply flow indicates that an increase of 1.0 litre min−1 in oxygenator fresh-gas supply flow induces an increase of 2.1 μg ml−1 in SPC. The slope of 0.32 for the haematocrit indicates that an increase of 1% in haematocrit induces an increase of 0.32 μg ml−1 in SPC. Fig 3 Scatterplot for the correlation between sevoflurane plasma concentration measured in blood samples by gas chromatography and the concentration of sevoflurane in the oxygenator exhaust gas measured using a side-stream infrared anesthetic gas analyser in the study population. r = Pearson coefficient for the correlation between SPC and the concentration of sevoflurane in the oxygenator exhaust gas.
