Origins of the Cold War: Post-War Germany Yalta Conference: Big Three decided to split Germany (and Berlin) into occupation zones after war, France gets a fourth zone later Goals: 1)demilitarize their zone, 2) rebuild zone’s economy, 3) punish war criminals 4) reunify zones w/new German gov Countries invaded by Hitler will have free elections to decided their future Big Three

Origins of Cold War: Post War Japan Potsdam Conference: Churchill tells Truman not to trust Stalin & that Stalin is getting too much in the conferences. Truman warns Stalin of a secret weapon that US may use on Japan After US uses A-Bomb, Stalin unable to co-occupy Japan. US will solely demilitarize Japan & rebuild Japan’s economy MacArthur in charge of Japan, allows Emperor Hirohito to stay but trials are held in Tokyo to punish war criminals Asian territory taken by Japan is given back, but US keeps most Pacific islands.
