15.1 Energy Conversion and Conservation Chapter 15 15.1 Energy Conversion and Conservation

Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can be converted from one form to another but not created or destroyed.

Energy Conversion Energy conversion is the process of changing energy from one form to another.

Lighting a Match Chemical energy in your body moves your hand. This produces kinetic energy. Friction of the moving match causes it to strike. This is thermal energy.

Energy Conversions The gravitational potential energy (GPE) of an object is converted to the kinetic energy (KE) of motion as the object falls.

Energy Conversion Calculations Mechanical energy = kinetic energy + potential energy Mechanical energy = KE + PE

Conservation of Mechanical Energy (KE + PE) beginning = (KE + PE) end

Energy and Mass Einstein’s equation (E = mc2) says that energy and mass are equivalent and can be converted into each other.

Energy and Mass That means that : Energy is released as matter is destroyed, and matter can be created from energy.
