6th Grade Vocabulary Part Six Characteristics of Meteors, Asteroids, and Comets

Meteor A small, solid rock traveling through Earth’s atmosphere.

Meteorite A meteor that survives the plunge through the Earth’s atmosphere and lands on the surface.

Meteoroid Small particles of comets or asteroids that are in orbit around the sun.

Asteroid Small chunks of rock revolving around the sun between Mars and Jupiter; together they make up the asteroid belt.

Comet A small frozen mass of gas and dust revolving around the sun.
