What will we be learning? HHS Zoology Class Zoology Intro What will we be learning? HHS Zoology Class

A.What is Zoology? 1. The study of Animals. 2. It is a subset of the broad discipline of biology. 3. Biology is the study of life.

Let’s create a concept map of what we think we will study in Zoology. Vertebrates Invertebrates

B. Zoology covers? 1. Entomology (the study of insects) to Ornithology (the study of birds) 2. Animals are intimately linked to their environments. 3. Ecology is the study of this relationship.

C. How is Zoology Structured? 1. The current system was developed by Karl von Linne. 2. It is binomial nomenclature. 3. Everything is given a name, consisting of a Genus and a species.

4. Taxonomy- the science of classifying plants and animals Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species Write a mnemonic device for this in the blanks.

D. Biodiversity 1. The fact that there are millions of variations among the plants and animal of the world. Population of Blount County 2015 estimate: 57,673 b. State of AL 2015 est.: 4,858,979 c. U.S. 321,418,820 Imagine if we were all the same? YUCK!

E. Anatomical Terminology 1. Anterior 14. Caudal 2. Posterior 15. Aboral 3. Dorsal 16. Intermediate 4. Ventral 5. Superior 6. Inferior 7. Proximal 8. Distal 9. Medial 10. Lateral 11. Superficial 12. Deep 13. Plantar

F. Body Plans 1. Acoelomate 2. Pseudocoelomate 3. Coelomate

G. Body Symmetry 1. Radial 2. Bilateral 3. Asymmetrical

H. Use Taxonomic Groupings to differentiate invertebrates using Dichotomous keys

I. Use Taxonomic Groupings to Differentiate Vertebrates with Dichotomous Keys

J. Distinguishing Species 1. Factors used to distinguish species: a. Behavioral Differences b. Reproductive Isolation

K. Ways Species Adapt to changing environments 1. Enhances survival 2. Increases reproductive success 3. Includes changes in structure, behavior or physiology

L. Threatened, Endangered, and Extinct Animals 1. Differences between categories 2. Projects on certain animals (in spring) How can we help?

Threatened Animals

Endangered Animals

Extinct Animals Quagga Passenger Pigeons Baiji River Dolphin

M. Field Study 1. Animal Behavior Patterns related to an animals niche 2. Ex. Birding
