The Principles of Nursing Practice What do they mean for you?

Purpose of workshop Showcase the Principles of Nursing Practice Explain what they are, how they were developed and how they can be used Make a “Principles promise” – doing something differently to improve patient care

“These eight principles describe the values on which the profession is based and are a commitment to patients, their families, carers and colleagues. I consider these should be over-arching statements that frame the future of nursing.” Anne Milton

What are they? 8 principles that describe what the public can expect from nursing practice in any setting

How were they developed? - With patients, for patients They were developed jointly between nurses and patients, service users and patient groups What can they be used for?

For the nursing team to reflect on the principles of their own practice

For clinical leaders engaging the nursing team with reviewing and evaluating nursing care

For sharing with patients and users as the basis of obtaining feedback

Examples and discussion

Ask yourselves What challenges would this present to you as a member of a nursing team caring for this person? How would you deal with a situation like this? What principles would apply to how you would care for this person? What would the person experience if you were using these principles throughout their care?

Any questions?

What I will do differently to improve patient care Now make a Principles Promise! What I will do differently to improve patient care
