The Strange Disappearance of Human Resources Professionals THE NEXT MEGA HIT MOVIE The Strange Disappearance of Human Resources Professionals What would companies do?? How would we survive? Follow us…

AGENDA PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS SCENARIOS BRIEF OUTS SUMMARIZE “When you show deep empathy toward others, their defensive energy goes down, and positive energy replaces it. That's when you can get more creative in solving problems. Stephen Covey

Problem / Problem Solving A problem is a situation you want to change. Problem solving is a process that people use to make decisions. “When your happiness comes primarily from the happiness of others, you know you have moved from a 'me' experience to a 'we' experience. And the whole problem-solving and opportunity-seizing process changes. “ Stephen Covey

The Problem Solving Model Step 1: Identify the Problem Step 2: Identify Root Cause Step 3: Generate Possible Solutions Step 4: Analyze Possible Solutions Step 5: Decide on a Plan Step 6: Implement the Plan Step 7: Evaluate the Plan

Problem Solving Model Step 1 – Identify the Problem A clear problem statement contains the following characteristics: Describes the current problem that needs to be solved States the desired outcome States specifics – supported by data, if available Step 2 – Identify the Root Cause Possible causes – the most crucial step The root cause answers the “because” of the problem statement

Problem Solving Model (cont) Step 3 – Generate Possible Solutions Brainstorm ideas of possible solutions Pick the preferred solutions Step 4 – Analyze Possible Solutions Weigh the pros and cons Analyze top 3 potential solutions

Problem Solving Model (cont) Step 5 – Decide on a Plan An action plan establishes a written record of accountability for implementation and increases the likelihood that ongoing monitoring will occur. Step 6 – Implement the Plan Do it! Step 7 – Evaluate the Plan How effective was the plan? Does the existing plan need to be revised? Is a new plan needed to better address the problem?

What is your on-the-job problem? Write a problem statement and apply the problem solving model What have you learned that you can do to approach and solve problems that occur at work more effectively?

“Make small commitments and keep them. Be a light, not a judge “Make small commitments and keep them. Be a light, not a judge. Be a model, not a critic. Be a part of the solution, not the problem.” Stephen Covey
