Determining Importance Comprehension Strategy #3

Decisions about importance of text are made based on: Reader’s Schema -- if an idea is closely related to background knowledge it will be deemed most important by reader Purpose for reading text Reader’s beliefs, opinions, and experiences related to the text

Determining importance (cont.) Knowledge of text format (titles, headings, subheadings, graphs, pictures, and quotes) will give clues as to what is important. Key words, sentences, concepts Concepts mentioned by other readers

Determining importance (cont.) Be able to explain importance of information & how their decision affects their overall understanding of the piece Be able to defend a position about important information. “I think this is important because…”
