Overview of PV Power System Photovoltaic – Anything that produces electricity when exposed to light. PV system works in tandem with utility grid. Feeds excess power back to the utility. Draws energy from the grid when renewable resources are not available. Source: Electric Light & Power

Overview of PV Power System Interconnection – Process of connecting renewable technologies to the larger electrical grid. Allows power to be transmitter between utility provider and end-user. Interconnection allows power to move back and forth in either direction. Source: Electric Light & Power

Overview of PV Power System Inverter Converts variable direct current (DC) output of a PV module into a utility frequency alternating current (AC) that can be fed into the electrical grid. Optimizer DC to DC converter technology that maximizes the energy harvest from the PV module PV Monitoring Equipment Maximizes O&M

Overview of PV Power System PV modules are connected in an array Optimizers allow each module to function at its maximum power point. Indiana Senate Bill 309/IC 8-1-40 Net Metering: Means of measuring the difference between the electricity supplied by an electric utility and the electricity generated from a renewable energy resource facility owned and operated by an electric retail customer when any portion of the electricity generated by the renewable energy resource facility is used to offset part or all of the electric retail customer’s demand for electricity. Senate Bill 309 signed into law in May 2017 Facilities with a maximum capacity of 1 MW are eligible for net metering Net metered facilities must comply with Indiana’s Interconnection Standards 170 IAC 4-4.3

Indiana Senate Bill 309/IC 8-1-40 Customer must have “installed” a net metering facility by December 31, 2017 to meet the deadline for the 30-year grandfathering of previous effective net metering rules. If customer “installs” a net metering facility by December 31, 2022 the customer will get the higher retail rate for up to 15 years. After December 31, 2022, if a customer “installs” a net metering facility they will receive a lower wholesale rate plus a premium of 25 percent. Net metering customers must maintain insurance coverage of at least $100,000 against loss arising out of use of a net metered facility. Utilities may require higher amounts.
