Figure 1 The effect of relatively long-term of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) on the colonic microbiota and its potential predisposition for Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) as reported by Freeberg et al in this issue of Gastroenterology. Certain bacterial strains (Enterococcae, streptococcal strains, and Clostridiceae) and bacterial genes associated with epithelial invasion were identified after PPI treatment and correspond largely to CDI risk. PPI treatment did not influence total bacteria diversity. Identifying a PPI-induced microbial foot print that can predispose CDI may pave the way for future therapeutic strategies including dietary interventions, novel probiotics, antimicrobials, potential pathogen vaccination, and fecal microbiota transplants.17 Gastroenterology 2015 149, 848-850DOI: (10.1053/j.gastro.2015.08.039) Copyright © 2015 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions
