IONIC BONDING When an atom of a nonmetal takes one or more electrons from an atom of a metal so both atoms end up with eight valence electrons.

Types of Bonds. There are two main types of bonds that atoms can form Covalent Bonds Ionic Bonds.
Ionic Bonds. Ions are atoms that have become charged by gaining or losing electrons. Cations are positively charge ions (metals). Anions are negatively.

Rule of Zero Charge All ionic compounds are neutral. Every time a metal atom and a nonmetal atom bond, they form a compound with an overall zero charge, the charges on metal cations and the nonmetal anions add up to zero.

Vocabulary Cation- a positively charged ion, loses its electrons Anion- a negatively charged ion, gains electrons Ion-an atom that either gained or lost electrons Subscript -In chemical formulas the number of atoms in a molecule is written as a subscript, so we write H2O for water which has two atoms of hydrogen for each one of oxygen.
