Constructing an SDZ for Hand Grenades (Single Bay) Inter-service Resident Range Safety Course (Intermediate) Version: August 2003 Constructing an SDZ for Hand Grenades (Single Bay) Construct the SDZ for the M67 Fragmentation Grenade. Map Scale: 1:2500 Requirements for SDZs for this weapon system are discussed in DA-PAM 385-63, Chapter 7, Figure 7-1. The following information is provided: Throwing distance (Distance X): 40m Fragmentation distance: 150m Combined Distance X and fragmentation hazard radius: 190m August 2003 SDZ Construction: Hand Grenades

Scale Conversion Some surface danger zones will not be drawn to 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 scale. Here is how to convert to the necessary scale: Determine what scale you are going to use (e.g., 1:2500) Select the scale of the measuring device you will use. Use the following formula: X = (a x 1,000) ÷ b a = scale to be used b = scale of measuring device August 2003

Scale Conversion Here is an example: Formula: X = (a x 1,000) ÷ b a = scale to be used b = scale of measuring device Here is an example: Using a 1:25,000 measuring device, convert to 1:2,500 scale. X = (a x 1,000) ÷ b X = (2500 x 1000) ÷ 25,000 X = 2,500,000 ÷ 25,000 X = 100m 1,000 meters on the 1:25,000 scale, represents 100 meters on a scale of 1:2,500 August 2003

Plot the throwing position. Plot the target. Plot the grenade target line. August 2003

45° From the throwing position, measure 45° right and left of the Grenade Throwing Line. Draw tic marks. August 2003

From the throwing position, draw straight lines through tic marks From the throwing position, draw straight lines through tic marks. These are the Dispersion Lines. On the Grenade Throwing Line, draw a tic mark at the measurement for Distance X (190m). August 2003

Place the needle of the compass at the throwing position and scribe an arc between the Dispersion Lines at 190m mark. This is the frag distance from the throwing point. August 2003

Measure 40m up each Dispersion Line Measure 40m up each Dispersion Line. Draw a tic mark at the 40m measurements. August 2003

Place the needle of the compass in each tic mark and the pencil at the point where the previously drawn arc intersects with the Dispersion Line. Scribe an arc on each side about 3/4 of the way back toward the throwing position. August 2003

Using the grenade target line as a reference, lightly draw a line behind the throwing position. Draw a tic mark at 150m. August 2003

Erase any unnecessary lines. Place the needle of the compass at the throwing position and scribe an arc through the tic mark. Erase any unnecessary lines. August 2003

Erase any unnecessary lines. Place the needle of the compass at the throwing position and scribe an arc through the tic mark. Erase any unnecessary lines. August 2003
