Ganymede May Harbor 'Club Sandwich' of Oceans and Ice In this computer graphic, NASA's Voyager 1 probe, moving toward upper left, nears the edge of the sun's influence, flying through a region of space dominated by a "magnetic highway" that helps mediate the flow of particles into and out of the solar system. The region includes particles from the sun's southern hemisphere that have been forced northward by the pressure of the interstellar wind. Voyager 1 is expected to cross the boundary into interstellar space sometime within the next few years if not sooner. (Credit: NASA)

New Craft Will Be America's First Space Lifeboat in 40 Years

Entire Star Cluster Thrown Out of Its Galaxy

The Night Sky Friday, May 2 How soon after sunset can you see the first stars and planets coming out? The brightest is Jupiter. Look for it high in the west, almost two fist-widths at arm's length above or upper left of the Moon. The second brightest is Sirius, sinking in the southwest. Saturday, May 3 The waxing crescent Moon shines below Jupiter in the west at dusk. Above Jupiter are Pollux and Castor. Sky & Telescope
