Organic Compounds Contain the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Carbon is found in things that are or once were living.
Building Blocks of Life TEKS 7.6A identify that organic compounds contain carbon and other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, nitrogen or sulfur.

Levels of Organization

Atom Smallest unit of matter Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen NON-living

Molecule 2 or more bonded atoms forming a compound Water, salt, sugar NON-living

Macromolecule Very large, complex molecules Proteins, fats, carbohydrates, nucleic acids NON-living

Organelle a cell part that performs a specific function Made of macromolecules Nucleus, mitochondria, ribosome Non-living

Cell Basic unit of structure & function in life Made of organelles Nerve cells, blood cells, stem cells LIVING

Tissue A group of similar cells that perform a certain function muscle, fat, tendons, bone, hair Living

Organ A body part composed of various tissues that performs a certain function Examples: lungs, heart, eye, kidney Living

Organ System A group of organs that work as a team to complete specific functions Example: brain + nerves + eyes + etc = nervous system Living

Something that has all 6 characteristics of life Organism Something that has all 6 characteristics of life Usually made of systems May be a single cell Plants, animals, bacteria Living
