Literature: Friday, October 5, 2018 Handouts: * None Homework: * Read an AR book 20 – 30 minutes daily & record on chart Assignments Due: * Rumpelstiltskin, p. 277, questions #1-5 on notebook paper

Today’s Goal: Learn the distinctive features of fairy tales as you read and analyze “Rapunzel.” Outcomes: Define and describe what is meant by “fairy tale.” List 10 common elements (or features) of most fairy tales. Define “symbol” and identify one way that a symbol is used in Rapunzel. Explain what is meant by “character types.”

Starter #1: What happened in the story you read yesterday, Rapunzel? Can anyone summarize the story for us? How do we retell or summarize a story? Cover these points: * Title—what is it and why is that significant/important? * Main characters—who are they? * Setting? * Main conflict? * Summarize (list) the main events in order

Starter #2: Remember that in Fairy Tales, the characters do not grow and change, like they do in other stories or in real life. Nor do they have both good and bad qualities—they are either all good or all bad. These characters are often symbols, who stand for some type of quality, like love, patience, greed, etc. Can you find any character types in this story that serve as symbols?

Starter #3: Open your Chromebook to my website, scroll to LA for Oct. 5, and call up the PDF “Rumpelstiltskin.” Let’s begin this together. Discuss: How does this modern ending compare with the original? Do you know the original version? If not, let’s use the link to it on the website.
