“A Wilderness Warning!” Hebrews 3:7-19

Located just off of Michigan Avenue in Chicago…

Mary and I saw three young girls talking about their “dolls” they had just purchased…

Three husbands… I made eye contact and said, “Run, little men, run Three husbands… I made eye contact and said, “Run, little men, run!” They smiled and laughed while we left.

to better understand the seriousness of falling away from grace Purpose: to better understand the seriousness of falling away from grace

I Consider Israel in the WILDER- NESS (vv 7-11) A. Israel Hardened Their Hearts

Proverbs 28:14 “How blessed is the man who fears always, but he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.”

I Consider Israel in the WILDER- NESS (vv 7-11) A. Israel Hardened Their Hearts B. Israel Did Not Enter God’s Rest

Ephesians 5:6 “Let no one deceive you with empty words for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.”

II Consider the Danger of DE- PARTING (vv 12-14) A. The Need to “Take Care” B. The Solution – “Exhort One Another Daily”

Hebrews 10:24-25 “And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the day drawing near.”

II Consider the Danger of DE- PARTING (vv 12-14) A. The Need “Take Care” B. The Solution – “Exhort One Another Daily” C. The Reminder – “Partakers of Christ”

Hebrews 3:6 “But Christ was faithful as a Son over His house whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.”

Revelation 2:10 “Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that you may be tested… Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

III Consider the APPLICATION (vv 15-19) A. Another Appeal is Made

“to incite, to exacerbate, to exasperate” parapikrainw “to incite, to exacerbate, to exasperate”

apeiQew “stubborn refusal to be persuaded… unwilling to listen to reason… stiff necked/obstinate”

III Consider the APPLICATION (vv 15-19) A. Another Appeal is Made B. Faith THAT Works

Another warning given; yet, with such warnings we all tend to ignore or at the very least give no heed…

During the 1982 war in the Falkland Islands (war between England and Argentina), the Royal Navy’s 3,500 ton destroyer HMS Sheffield was sunk by a single missile fired from an Argentina fighter jet…

Summary and Conclusion: My point and the point of this text is this. There is “an eternal rest.” People who through their unbelief abandon Christianity will ultimately find themselves excluded from that rest just as surely as Israel was excluded from the Promised Land. Consider this warning – a wilderness warning.
