Spanish Florida and Manifest Destiny

From “Harvest of Empire” How would you characterize the relationship between the Spanish and Native Americans in Florida? How would you characterize the relationship between the Spanish in Florida and the Americans? How did Spain respond to increasing numbers of settlers? Can you relate this policy to anything else you’ve learned? How could you best characterize the Filibusteros? Do they have legitimacy? How does this fit in with what you learned before about Manifest Destiny?

From “Harvest of Empire” Describe Andrew Jackson’s interest in Florida. How does Monroe’s recognition of independent Mexico tie in with the Monroe Doctrine? How does this tie in with the larger picture of Manifest Destiny? What does Jackson actually do in Florida?

Henry Clay’s Speech to Congress According to Henry Clay, what struggle is America facing on a global scale? What crime is he accusing Jackson of? What does he want Congress to do? Why? Is Clay justified in his scolding of Jackson? Why or why not?
