Starter – consider the following situation The NHS only have the funds to treat a child for leukaemia or an elderly man. Who should they spend the money on? What are the reasons for your answer?

Social choices can affect health….. Should the NHS treat lung cancer patients who smoke 20 cigarettes a day? What are the reasons for your answer?

Social choices can affect health….. Watch the video about the impact of BINGE DRINKING on the NHS. What are your opinions about this? Discuss on your table for 2 minutes Be prepared to feedback to the class

Consider the impact of the following on society…………. Should we employ more doctors or nurses? What are the reasons for your answer?

Should people be allowed to make their own choices with regards to their health………… Should pregnant women be allowed to have a home birth? What are the reasons for your answer? Home births are more expensive and can be more risky as there is only a midwife present, not a doctor. Research shows that there aren’t currently enough midwives on labour wards to deal with the number of children being born.

Consider the impact on society….. Parents currently receive money each month when they have a child. This can be spent on anything as the money is directly transferred into the parents’ bank account. Should the money be paid to parents’ who choose to have a child? Should their be a cap after a certain number of children? Should they only be able to spend it in certain shops and on certain items e.g. Clarks shoes?
