Accident Details Truck on its side in the ditch with water in it Truck laying against a hill of sand Small fire under truck with smoke billowing Gray gravel like substance also on fire Driver alert and responsive smoking a cigarette Hazmat Placards with ID Number 1403

What to do First Before anything else call 911. Next, the driver needs to be removed to a safe location and cigarette extinguished. The driver is clearly not well enough to make good judgment, much less to assist. Due to the smoke, a safe area should be established a safe distance away and upwind from the accident.

ERG Actions Although there is a class A fire extinguisher available on the scene, cargo is violently reactive to water. Therefore, using a water based class A fire extinguisher would acerbate the situation. Instead, donn positive pressure SCBA protective gear and cover small fire with dry sand from hill.

ERG Actions (Cont.) Isolate spill area for at least 25 meters, keep out of low areas, and stay upwind. If small fire is contained, no wide scale evacuation is necessary. If fire grows, and a tanker truck is involved, isolation area of ½ mile is recommended.
