Essential Question: What were the three main positions towards American Imperialism? Describe each opinion providing examples of each.

Position #1: Imperialists In favor of the 3 G’s: God, Gold, Glory New markets needed Need to spread democratic ideas Believed the U.S. was superior to others and should expand beyond its borders “With great power comes great responsibility” “White Man’s Burden” Notable Imperialists: Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt

Position #2: Anti-Imperialists Small but vocal group They argued the U.S. was a democracy that protected liberty Colonization takes away the freedom of others Morally against colonization Economically expensive to colonize others Democracy cannot be spread to others Notable Anti-Imperialists: Mark Twain (author) and William Jennings Bryan (Populist leader)

Position #3: Land should be left to natives—It’s our land to begin with Dates back to the early 1800s during Manifest Destiny Inhabitants of lands the U.S. tries to expand to resist colonization Notable resisters: Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii, Emilio Aguinaldo of the Philippines
