Photosynthesis

Energy Energy is the ability to do work Cars running on fuel  Chemical Energy Computers and light bulbs  Electrical Energy

Living organisms depend on energy, too. Sometimes, it is easy to see when we need energy Other times, it is not that obvious…but we always need energy.

All organisms obtain energy in different ways

How do autotrophs/producers obtain energy? All the energy that living organisms use can be traced back to the sun.

What is Photosynthesis? Photo = Light Synthesis = Creating/Building/Putting Together Means “using light to create something” Chemical reaction that uses sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose (sugar) and oxygen

Reactants for Photosynthesis Plants only need: Carbon Dioxide Water Sunlight (Activation Energy)

Products from Photosynthesis Plants will produce: Glucose (Carbohydrate) Oxygen

General Chemical Reaction + Sunlight 6CO2 6H20 C6H12O6 + 6O2 Carbon Dioxide Glucose (Sugar) + Sunlight Water + Oxygen

Occurs in the chloroplast of leaf cells Chlorophyll Green pigment/molecule in chloroplast that gathers the sun’s energy. Stoma/Stomata Small opening in surface of leaf that allows air (CO2) to enter.

Water and carbon dioxide become Sugar and oxygen. Photosynthesis Uses light from the sun. Water and carbon dioxide become Sugar and oxygen. It happens in the chloroplast That chlorophyll makes green. The autotrophs can make their food Then we won’t go hungry.
