States of Matter

There are three states of matter. Solids Liquids Gases

Matter is made up of anything that takes up space and has mass. Does air take up space? Does air have mass?

Solids Have a definite shape Have a definite volume Molecules are packed tightly together Molecules cannot move freely

Liquids Have no fixed shape Have a definite volume Molecules are packed loosely together Molecules can move a little

Gases Have no definite shape Have no definite volume Molecules are far apart Molecules move freely

Changes of State Liquid Solid Gas melting evaporating freezing condensing

Review Questions 1. Name the three states of matter. 2. The molecules cannot move freely in which state of matter? 3. The change from a liquid to a gas is called _____________. 4. The change from a gas to a liquid is called _____________.

Question to think about! Why are changes of state important?
