Metaphor Poems With Ms. Elliot

What is a metaphor? A metaphor is a type of figurative language that compares two unlike things without using “like” or “as”. Choose object in class Choose object in kitchen/bathroom Now, combine two things to create metaphors

I Am a Rock Simon & Garfunkel Listen to the song and follow along by reading What words don’t you know? Outside of the poem vs. inside of the poem

Sylvia Plath “Metaphors” Each line is a different metaphor for the SAME thing. Your task: Read the poem carefully. What is the metaphor? Done early? Start writing the best metaphors you can.

Create a Class Metaphor Poem Give me a metaphor. Create a word bank Let’s create a poem! Check it: Is every line true of BOTH nouns? Does it have cliches? Your turn! Write your own metaphor poem in your LA Notebook

Ms. Elliot’s Metaphor Poem

Create a Metaphor Poem About Yourself Choose an item Create a word bank Create a poem! Check it: Is every line true of BOTH nouns? Does it have clichés?

Metaphor Workshop Day! Conference Fine Tune Decorate Type Ms. Roon is here to help! Fine Tune Use thesaurus, dictionaries, brains! Decorate Use colored pencils! Scissors, Etc… Type Use computers or iPads!

Pennant Metaphor Project Transfer your poem to Word. Decide on a readable font and appropriate font size (not too big, not too small…think Goldilocks) Print poem and cut out You may also write out your poem by hand if you like that way better. Make it neat! Place your poem on your pennant. Decorate the rest of the Pennant in a creative way. It should represent you in some way (if you’re into soccer, make a soccer ball border, etc…) Use all your available space so it looks cool. Try not to hang heavy things off the pennant and please, please, please avoid glitter, the root of all evil messes. Other than that, go for it. Colored pencils are recommended over markers. Include a picture of yourself and your name in BOLD and Big Enough to See somewhere on the pennant.
