Tuesday 3/6/18 Notebook Entry: Where do you think the majority of Earth’s water is located? What do you think is the source of drinking water for most people?

Water…without it we would not be here! Living Processes – allows us to break down our food, grow, reproduce. This includes ALL plants and animals Habitats

All water on Earth – this sphere is about 860 miles in diameter. Earth's liquid fresh water in groundwater, swamp water, rivers, and lakes. This sphere is about 169.5 miles in diameter. Yes, all of this water is fresh water, which we all need every day, but much of it is deep in the ground, unavailable to humans. Do you notice the "tiny" bubble? That one represents fresh water in all the lakes and rivers on the planet. Most of the water people and life on earth need every day comes from these surface-water sources. The diameter of this sphere is about 34.9 miles. Denver is about 800 miles from Helena to give you some perspective. Yes, Lake Michigan looks way bigger than this sphere (smallest one), but you have to try to imagine a bubble almost 35 miles high—whereas the average depth of Lake Michigan is less than 300 feet (91 meters). How much of this Tiny Dot of Freshwater do you use each day? Go to Mrs. Burke’s Webpage and click on Unit 6: Water and the Atmosphere Find today’s date and click on the Water Use Calculator Link Use your survey answers to complete the questions in the water use calculator (If you do not have a survey make your best estimate.) On the questions that ask if you have a low flow toilet, shower, faucet select YES. On the questions that ask if you have Energy Star Appliances select YES Skip the questions about watering your yard, outside water and pool.

Compare your usage Once you complete the calculator your Household Use will appear over on the right. You can also look at your individual usage. Answer the following two questions at the bottom of the survey paper After completing the water calculator record your family's estimated daily water usage amount:  __________ How does this amount compare to the 25 gallons per day that families in Cape Town are receiving?

How did this problem start????? Cape Town and Day Zero How did this problem start????? To begin to answer this question we need to look at how the Earth cycle’s water around the planet.

Exit ticket Take a post-it out of the basket and write your answer to the following question: What parts of the earth system are involved in the cycling of freshwater? (Remember the main parts are the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, & geosphere) Put your post-it on your class period’s question poster.
