Identify parts of the screen (from NZCC2 learning)
An Excel worksheet looks like … This is the title bar This is the status bar These buttons at the top right corner control the Excel program
Help!! if you have trouble identifying some parts – on at the top of your window key question eg answer will appear
Sheets Sheets have tabs they are called Sheettabs When you click on a sheettab, that worksheet becomes the active worksheet – the one you are working on
The ribbon …. The ribbon has TABS If you click on this icon and choose the ribbon will disappear click here to bring the ribbon back
Groups on TABs…. Command buttons (often the same buttons as in other programs)
Dialog box launchers … Dialog box will appear
QAT … (the Quick Access Toolbar) Click on the down arrow and choose the items which you frequently use They will appear in your QAT
What the cursor looks like ….. Cursor or Cell pointer or Cell selector This “fat white cross” is used for highlighting and selecting cells This “small black cross” is used for filling cells down or across This “four directional black arrow” is used for moving cell data
Active Cell - where the cursor is sitting (a cell is where a column and row meet) Cell address in the NAME BOX Each CELL can be uniquely referenced by a combination of its COLUMN letter (A,B,C) and ROW number (1,2,3). This is known as the CELL ADDRESS eg H24 (Col H, Row 24) or A1 (Col A Row 1)
Formula Bar when you key data in a cell, it appears in the formula bar as well Cancel / Enter button if you choose Cancel, the data will disappear if you choose Enter, the data will appear in the cell
Dragging this border can change the width of a column to allow text to be seen As you “drag” the new width will be shown Release the mouse, column will widen
If you change the size of a font, then the row height SHOULD change automatically Dragging this border can change the height of a row if necessary
Formatting cells can be done using shortcut keys Formatting cells SHOULD NOT be done using the icons shown – the formats are not set up correctly for use in New Zealand Formatting cells can be done using shortcut keys
Ctrl + Shift + 1 comma format Ctrl + Shift + 4 currency format Ctrl + Shift + 5 percentage format You can use the icons to Decrease/increase decimal places
