Wheelchair Checkpoints for Safe Transport Parent Guide Aldine ISD Occupational and Physical Therapy Department 2/6/2008

Before each student gets onto the bus the following items must be checked: Brakes Proper posture with the hips all the way back in the chair and centered on the seat. All straps fastened snugly * the shoulder harness cross connection should be at the chest, not the neck, * the pelvic belt to be below the stomach. * check under blankets and coats * shoe straps when present Seat & back must be securely attached to the frame.

Wheelchair Attachments The padded seat and back MUST be attached properly to the frame of the chair. Some attachment types include: the crescent shaped clip on a hinge, or a simple lever. The most common attachment type is the KNOB attachment. See the following illustrations of knob attachments.

Notify the wheelchair vendor if you are: Unable to fasten the seat and/or back to the frame of the wheelchair Unable to get the brakes to stop the wheels from turning Unable to fasten the belts or harnesses Noticing other adjustments that need to be made to the chair Noticing your child no longer fits properly in the chair In need of the 6 to 12 month wheelchair check up
