Introduction Goal: Develop alternative method of searching images based on content rather than keywords. Why?: Current methods can provide unrelated results, based on incorrect labeling by humans. Founder’s Day, 2007 University of Portland School of Engineering

Background Current image searching relies on surrounding keywords and metadata (i.e. Google Image Search) Founder’s Day, 2007 University of Portland School of Engineering

Background (continued) VS. = are these images similar? Our method analyzes the individual pixels and compares two images based on their content Founder’s Day, 2007 University of Portland School of Engineering

Methods Project Approval Questions we asked ourselves First Step Second Step Prototyping Founder’s Day, 2007 University of Portland School of Engineering

Methods (continued) Third Step Code, Code, Code Testing Prototype Release

Results Simple Architecture process input file compare histograms Founder’s Day, 2007 University of Portland School of Engineering

Results (continued) Data we collect and compare: A B

Results, cont. Subject Testing Our early goal for testing Results: group of 15 test subjects ranging majors from Finance to History, as well as a mesh of various Engineering majors. Displayed 20 images from our set to the subjects Average of 79% relevant results

Results (continued) Comments received ‘“I like the simplicity” “Very innovative” “Great look to site, easy to handle” “Overall, awesome”

Conclusions Developed alternative method of searching images based on content rather than keywords. Our method analyzes the individual pixels and compares two images based on content Subject testing a success Founder’s Day, 2007 University of Portland School of Engineering

Demonstration The submitted image will be the image atop the tabled results (larger image) The resulting set will be below the submitted. Images were gathered from a similar project from Stanford. 1000 images ranging from elephants, buses, buildings, beaches, and an assorted of other animals and scenes.
