Every country has its own traditions and customs Every country has its own traditions and customs. In Britain traditions play a very important role in the life of people. The British are proud of their traditions and keep them carefully.

Britain is full of culture and traditions which have been around for hundreds of years.

It is known that the English are stay-at-home people It is known that the English are stay-at-home people. “There is no place like home”, they say. When they don't work they like to spend their days off at home with their families.

English people keep to their traditions even in meals. English meals English people keep to their traditions even in meals. They eat eggs and bacon with toasts for breakfast, pudding or apple pie for dessert. Porridge is the dish Englishmen are very fond of. Many of them eat porridge with milk and sugar for breakfast.

English people like domestic animals English people like domestic animals. Every family has a pet: a dog, a cat or a bird.

Black cats are generally considered lucky in Britain, even though they are associated with witchcraft - a witch's animal-familiar' is usually a black cat. It is especially lucky if a black cat crosses your path.

Politeness is a characteristic feature of Englishmen Politeness is a characteristic feature of Englishmen. They often say "Thank you", "Sorry", "Beg your pardon".

The most favourite holiday is Christmas The most favourite holiday is Christmas. Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It's a big Christmas tree and it stands in the Trafalgar Square.

The fun starts the night before, on the 24th of December The fun starts the night before, on the 24th of December. Traditionally this is the day when people decorate their trees. Children hang stockings at their beds, hoping that Father Christmas will come down the chimney during the night and fill them with toys and sweets.

The 26th of December, Boxing Day, is an extra holiday after Christmas. Its the time to visit friends and relatives.

Halloween October 31 A pagan festival celebrates the return of the souls that visit their former houses. People dress up as witches, ghosts etc. Houses are decorated with pumpkins.

New Year’s Eve December 31 Traditionally Scottish celebration. At midnight everybody joins hands and sings Auld Lang Syne.

Mother’s day People visit their mothers if possible and give them flowers and small presents. If they cannot go they send a “Mothers’Day card”.

St. Valentine’s Day – February 14 On this day, people send Valentine cards to their husbands, wives, girlfriends and boyfriends. You can also send a card to a person you do not know.
