Presentation transcript:

Adaptation Newmark (1988:46) says that this is the 'freest' type of translation which is mainly used in translating plays. In this type of translation, “the themes, characters, plots are usually preserved, the SL culture converted to the TL culture and the text rewritten” (ibid.). Example: Shakespeare’s Hamlet translation into Arabic by Khalil Mutran

Translation Strategies Naturalization and Arabization Naturalization is a translation strategy whereby SL usage is converted into normal TL usage. This naturalization process is basically carried out at lexical, collocational, and structural levels. negotiable translates into قابل للتفاوض The English collocation pay attention translates into يعير الانتباه It is raining now translates into الجو ماطر الآن

Arabization is a kind of naturalization that takes place either at the sound level where SL spelling and pronunciation are converted into Arabic ones or at the concept level where an SL concept is loan-translated into Arabic. Example: garage into كراج

Exercise: Naturalization 1. a readable novel 2. a conceivable proposal 3. retrievable properties 4. an arguable topic 5. a reddish bag 6. a boyish behavior 7. a feminist writer 8. praiseworthy behavior 9. an unrealizable goal 10. to rewrite the weekly report 11.the translatability of idioms into Arabic

Translate the following English sentences into Arabic It won't rain this evening. What a beautiful day! This idea sounds very convincing. The weather is not stable here. His house was attacked yesterday
