Volume 136, Issue 4, Pages 1281-1287 (April 2009) Improved Prognosis of Patients With Primary Biliary Cirrhosis That Have a Biochemical Response to Ursodeoxycholic Acid  Edith M.M. Kuiper, Bettina E. Hansen, Richard A. de Vries, Jannie W. den Ouden–Muller, Theo J.M. van Ditzhuijsen, Els B. Haagsma, Martin H.M.G. Houben, Ben J.M. Witteman, Karel J. van Erpecum, Henk R. van Buuren  Gastroenterology  Volume 136, Issue 4, Pages 1281-1287 (April 2009) DOI: 10.1053/j.gastro.2009.01.003 Copyright © 2009 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 Survival of patients with early, moderately advanced, and advanced PBC compared with a sample of the Dutch population, matched for sex and age. Observed prognosis is compared with prognosis predicted by the Mayo risk score (MRS). Survival for patients with early PBC was comparable to survival of the Dutch population (P = .254), and survival for patients with (moderately) advanced PBC was significantly worse (P < .001). For patients with early PBC, observed survival was better than predicted survival (P < .001); for patients with moderately advanced PBC and advanced PBC, the Mayo risk score predicted survival adequately (P = .90 and P = .23, respectively). Figure 2 Kaplan–Meier plots of survival free of transplantation for UDCA-treated patients with PBC according to biochemical response at 1 year defined by CO, PA, and RD criteria. Analysis started after 1 year of treatment with UDCA. a, responders; b, nonresponders.
