Characteristics of Living Things

1. All living things are made of cells; The basic units of structure and function in all living things unicellular (one celled organisms) multicellular (more than one cell) Cells have different functions, but they all work together to enable the individual to live and survive in its environment. Red Blood cells Onion skin epidermal cells Human cheek cells

2. All living things can move. All living organisms have internal movement, which means that they have the ability to move substances from one part of their body to another. Some living organisms show external movement. Animals move in order to find food, water, shelter, to mate and to avoid danger.

3. All living things obtain and use energy through the processes of: Metabolism Ingestion Digestion Respiration Excretion Energy powers life processes. It provides organisms with the ability to grow, reproduce and carry out other life functions.

4. All living things grow and develop. *Increase in cell size and/or number *Life Cycle- Birth, growth, reproduction, death. *Life Span- The maximum amount of time a particular organism is expected to live.

5. All living things respond to their environment. Living things respond to internal or external stimuli (changes) in their environment. Living things react to touch, light, heat, cold and sound along with signals from inside their bodies. Stimulus (signal) Response (action)

6. All living things often reproduce. Asexual: One parent example: bacteria, yeast, some plants and animals. Sexual: Requires 2 parents All Plants and animals
