March 2013 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13/0xxxr0 Summary May 2013 The design options discussed at prior 11aq meetings may be adequate for service discovery for BSS use cases. However several use cases are clearly IBSS cases and are not served by options noted in 13/0057r2. This presentation expands the design options under discussion to include the IBSS use cases for PAD. BUT AT ALL OTHER TIMES, we are on the move and our mobile WiFi devices have no “home network” with which to associate. Commuting: waiting for the bus, in the subway, on the street... In public places: malls, restaurants, stadiums, etc While waiting: in dentist office, at a hospital, in a restaurant, in security line at airport.... We fidget with our phones, check messages and mails, but have no way to discover the WiFi services in the devices all around us. These OTHER TIMES may be brief but are perfect for new diversions and recreations: Find your Facebook/LinkedIn friends in the immediate area Play a game you really enjoy with a fellow traveller in the waiting line Chat/rant with others in local IBSS chat room Share your music, pictures and favorite videos A richer personal life may enabled by IBSS PAD to find these new connections and diversions to enjoy in our otherwise idle moments. Which APs have available BW and admission capacity? Which APs have connection to services user seeks? ....etc. PAD access to ANQP info and legacy discovery protocols provide all of these. For IBSS discovery, services are provided by peers User needs service info about peers in radio range IBSS formation limited by radio range. All STAs in IBSS communicate. BUT for airline lounge without AP, use case requires IBSS discovery of same peer. #8, #11, and #20 are use cases accessing free public information which could also easily be accommodated by IBSS model. Discussed options inadequate for IBSS cases March 2013 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13/0xxxr0 May 2013 Discussed options inadequate for IBSS cases 11-13-0057-02-00aq-design-options describes simple methods to provide PAD service discovery for BSS cases Simple new protocol using a Discovery Proxy Server (DPS) as intermediary for STAs in pre-associated state. The intermediary provides discovery using existing discovery protocols, e.g. UPnP, bonjour etc. GAS protocol may also be used for network service advertisements New ANQP/GAS information items may also be created. These options will not work well for IBSS use cases Without DS access, IBSS STAs cannot communicate with DPS. In a BSS, GAS/ANQP services are provided by an AP or a network based server. IBSS STAs do not communicate with an AP and have no internet access to servers. ANQP advertised elements are mostly preconfigured, of fixed size, and when not fixed are limited in size by 2 octet length field. May not be adequate for transporting aggregated service descriptors for a dynamic IBSS. If a modified framework for ANQP were used, the standard would need to define protocol for IBSS to collect the relevant service availability information to populate the ANQP items for the current members of the IBSS. Power efficiency is more crucial requirement in IBSS. IBSS discovery needs to be scalable for use in all large public venues. Hundreds or more users in streets, halls, and stadiums, most of which are not served by traditional WiFi APs. Similar to beaconing in IBSS, burden for PAD discovery needs to be distributed among all users of IBSS discovery. Pre-association discovery in an IBSS is an important complement to PAD in the BSS cases. The focus of pre-association discovery is different for IBSS. IBSS PAD may have unique requirements.
